Recently founded, Derby Rock & Pop Choir bring contemporary music and beautiful harmonies together every Monday night at The VoiceBox.
Derby Rock & Pop Choir, established in September of this year by local music teacher Eleanor Lee, are bringing something a little different to the choral singing experience. The main goal is to provide a repertoire that is sourced entirely from pop music stretching from the fifties through to present day. Previous material includes Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys, Bill Withers' Lean On Me and Falling Slowly (Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova) . Eleanor also encourages song suggestions from members of the group.
Sometimes the music is entirely a capella, while other songs have an accompaniment played on a guitar or piano. The choir is currently about a dozen strong and predominantly female, but they are open to new members of all ages and both sexes. No knowledge of music theory is required - the songs are learned by ear - and there is a strong emphasis on fun, as opposed to the more formal atmosphere of traditional choirs. Professional vocal warm-ups and tips to get the best out of your voice are also offered, along with free tea and biscuits in the interval!
The VoiceBox is a venue with acoustically designed rooms, which allow for maximum aural clarity. The group intend to book some public performances in this and other venues, and perhaps make some recordings. Hatch'd Magazine will keep you posted as and when these occur. Derby Rock & Pop Choir meet at The VoiceBox on Forman Street every Monday, 7.30 – 9.30pm. Sessions cost £5.
