Feature: Sarah Cogdon Films

Sam spoke to local film maker Sarah Cogdon about what it’s been like to set up her own creative corporate film company.

“With the state of unemployment in England is it no wonder people have to think creatively about how they earn a living. I formed my own company because I wanted to be able to have creative reign over the projects I work on.

I would never have said I was a business minded person but I have had to learn fast and on the job. I managed to find myself some great business people to help and advise and support me through my rooky year, and I know because of this I will do the same for anyone I am in the position of helping.

My company has been going for over a year now.  It has definitely not been easy, but I have really enjoyed myself along the way. I have worked on some great projects, met some cool people and I am now feeling settled into the creative business scene within Derby. Filmmakers, photographers, designers and other creative people all do what they do for the same reason… to express themselves, creatively.

I love buzzing off other people’s ideas and find I am influenced by everything from art and design to popular culture and of course other filmmakers. I am constantly learning new tricks and the quality of my films have improved with all this fast evolving technology. The trick is to try and keep up.

My passion lies in factual filming and telling people’s stories. That’s my specialism; to tell peoples storie’s, each one is different and shapes the way the film will go. Also my background in design and music is a bonus, as I believe they all go hand in hand and are all equally vital to making the best film.

There have been so many great projects I have been involved in that I am not sure I can name my favourite one, though filming backstage with John & Edward at their first gig at the O2 for Sony was a crazy night!”
