Feature: Derbyshire Jeweller Launches Fairtrade collection

Rachel Helen is launching a new collection for those looking for a more ethical alternative to conventional gold for their wedding and engagement rings.

Ilkeston based Jeweller, Rachel Helen Designs is one of a select few jewellery makers in the UK to give customers the option of choosing Fairtrade and Fairmined Gold. "Most people wouldn't dream of buying a diamond unless it was completely ethical, but only a small amount of people stop to think about the origins of their gold," said Rachel, who is based at Shed 2 Studios in Ilkeston's town centre.

"In March 2010, the Fairtrade Foundation and the Alliance for Responsible Mining brought this issue to the forefront by announcing the launch of the Fairtrade and Fairmined gold standards. A number of artisanal and small scale mining groups in South America are now being audited to ensure that they meet a certain criteria before they can be certified to supply Fairtrade and Fairmined gold.  This is an area that I am really interested in and I'm very pleased to be able to give my customers the option to choose Fairtrade materials."

Rachel's new Briar Rose collection is a selection of limited edition wedding and engagement rings that can be set with any stone and made with 18ct Fairtrade gold. The collection consists of four engagement rings and two fitted shaped wedding rings to match. Each design emulates the naturalistic style that Rachel Helen is known for and each piece has a story to tell.
